Britain’s Department for International Development (DFID) says it will release £6.35 million (K3.3 billion) worth of support towards seed component of the Farm Input Subsidy Programme (Fisp).
The donation will help Malawi to provide affordable quality maize and legume seeds to 840,000 vulnerable households, out of over 1.5 million targeted beneficiaries across the country.
“We remain committed to supporting the Government of Malawi’s efforts to improve smallholder agricultural productivity and ensure that the country has enough food to feed its population,’ reads the statement, quoting head of DFID Malawi, Sarah Sanyahumbi.
She says UK is also delighted with the country’s action to strengthen the transparency of Fisp through publicity displaying list of beneficiaries, providing posters at markets with relevant information and widely publicizing the toll-free number with which beneficiaries report malpractice to the Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB).
“It is still important to continue to work together with the government, civil society and the private sector to explore and implement new ways of promoting transparency and increasing efficiency of Fisp in future,” says Sanyahumbi.
