The Citizen Daily reported that Tanzania has over 1 billion tonne of coal reserves. Iringa has largest coal deposits, according to a geological survey, the biggest coal reserve is at Mchuchuma where there are 536 million tonne, followed by Songwe in Mbeya with 147 million tonne.
Other areas, with reserves in brackets are Ruvuma’s Mbalawala Ngaka, Rukwa, Songea’s Mhukuru, Mbinga’s Mbamba Bay and Njuga. That means Tanzania has 1.081 billion tonne of unexploited coal deposits. By exploiting coal, Tanzania will have a huge supply of thermal power and will save forex used to import oil.
A report presented recently at the Great Rift Valle mining summit by the Geological Survey of Tanzania chief executive, Mr Abdulkarim Mruma, showed such huge coal reserves. GST is a government agency responsible for collecting and storing geo-scientific data and information on minerals.
