Posted Date 2013/09/04 23:02

MINING company Mwana Africa on Tuesday announced the appointment of Mark Wellesley-Wood as its new nonexecutive chairman.

Mr Wellesley-Wood is a mining engineer with more than 40 years’ experience in both the mining and investment banking industries, the company said in a statement.
The company has operations in South Africa and Zimbabwe, and interests in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Ghana and Botswana.

Mwana Africa CEO Kalaa Mpinga said the company was entering a new phase of development and was focused on operational delivery from its two mines in Zimbabwe, and the development of the Zani Kodo gold deposit in the Congo.
"Mark’s considerable operational and corporate experience will greatly assist us in delivering the maximum value from these assets," Mr Mpinga said.

"In addition, the company has recently announced a restructuring aimed at reducing corporate costs and concentrating on cash flow generation, and I believe Mark will be a valuable addition to the board as it looks to achieve these objectives."
Mr Wellesley-Wood was a director of Investec Investment Banking & Securities in London, prior to which he was head of corporate finance at Ambrian Partners.
He has been closely involved in mining activities in Southern Africa, after he started his career in the Zambian copper belt. He has also held positions in DRDGold and Metallon Gold.
