Kenya Power has over the last seven years invested nearly Shs.200 million in community
Kenya Power has over the last seven years invested nearly Shs.200 million in community projects under its corporate social responsibility programme.
Ag. Managing Director and CEO, Dr Ben Chumo, said the Company as a respected business enterprise was committed to exercising good corporate citizenry by giving back to the society that sustains it in business.
He was speaking today when he launched Kenya Power Charity Cup 2014 at a Nairobi hotel, to be played on February 2nd next year to raise funds for charitable causes. Four teams, selected by the public through SMS voting, will participate in the one-day tournament at Nyayo Stadium. Each SMS will be charged Shs.10.
The public will vote for their favourite teams by texting the team's name to 30300. The four teams with the highest number of votes will play on 2nd February 2014 on a knockout basis at Nyayo National Stadium. The 2 top teams will contend to be crowned winners of the Charity Cup 2014.
Only the 14 teams in the Kenya Premier League and the six Division One teams will be eligible for selection. The winning team will take home a cool Shs.1 million, while the runners-up will take Shs.600,000. The two third place teams will each take Shs.300,000.
Dr Chumo said Kenya Power devotes one percent of its annual after-tax profits to corporate social responsibility. However, he said the funds were inadequate hence the decision to sponsor the charity cup with the objective to raise additional funds to go to community projects across the country.
He announced that Shs.5.5 million raised at the inaugural event has been invested in three community projects in Nairobi County, and are currently ongoing. These include Dandora Social Hall, Kawangware sports grounds grading, and City Stadium flood lights refurbishment project.
The Company, he added, is also an active player in environment conservation through an extensive tree planting programme across the country as well as investment in various educational programmes.
The Charity Cup is organized by Kenya Power in conjunction with Football Kenya Federation, Kenya Premier League and Kenya Red Cross Society. The SMS voting process will be provided by Liberty Africa, an independent third party service provider whose services will be audited by Deloitte.
