Murang’a County; KENYA: Murang’a University College Council has been inaugurated with leaders calling on local investors to take advantage of the increasing number of students and members of the staff and construct residential houses.
Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria and Jomo Kenyatta University College of Agriculture Vice-Chancellor Prof Mabel Imbuga said there was urgent need for residences for both students and staff as part of development.
Several academicians from constituent colleges under JKUAT attended the inauguration ceremony.
Dr Alemba Nyag’ate from the Ministry of Education, who represented Education Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi at the ceremony, said the government was committed towards supporting university education by availing financial allocations.
The governor called on investors to explore the existing opportunities in housing sector in the major towns, saying on average Sh25 million per month could be earned from renting of houses.
“Murang’a business community should be taken for a tour in Kiambu and witness millions of shillings sank in the housing sector and hence earning the investors millions of shillings per month,” said Prof Imbuga.
The varsity administration said it has 1,420 students and more are expected to report this September.
Murang’a County Commissioner Ms Kula Hache said the town has come back to life with the launch of Murang’a University College. She said most of the buildings which had remained unoccupied for years have been rehabilitated and occupied.
Transfer of property
The college Principal, Prof Mary Walingo, asked the business community to take advantage of the rising number of students, lecturers and members of staff who are in need of residences.
Meanwhile, the Commission for University Education has said it will recommend the establishment of Kaimosi Friends University College in Vihiga to Prof Kaimenyi for approval.
