BERLIN, Germany, April 26, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Acting under Chapter VII, the UN Security Council today (25 April) unanimously approved a resolution establishing a UN stabilization mission containing a civilian support element (MINUSMA) to replace the African led AFISMA mission in Mali.
Foreign Minister Westerwelle, issuing the following statement in Berlin, welcomed the Security Council's decision:
I welcome the united stance shown by the United Nations Security Council. The approval of this resolution today shows that the international community is not abandoning Mali, but continuing to provide the country with strong support.
The UN mission, too, aims for a lasting political solution. For that Mali needs the support of the international community.
Germany is already making a substantial contribution in the context of the EU Training Mission in Mali (EUTM), as well as supporting the domestic political process in the country.
We will discuss over the coming weeks what form our contribution to the newly mandated UN stabilization mission might take.
