Exploiting the various sources of energy is vital in order to ensure the intended development. For a country which strive to achieve economic growth and eradicate poverty like Ethiopia, tapping the available resources has immense benefit. Currently, the government after having successfully completed the first phase of Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), it is preparing to embark to the implementation of the second phase of GTP. And to realize the programme, it emphasises for more exploitation of energy sources in a diversifying manner. As a result, hydropower, wind, solar and geothermal energy sources have been utilized.
In addition, potential sources are being exploited to support in meeting the demand. By now, totally the nation could reach to generate 2261MW power from various energy sources. However, as compared to the nation's development ambition and the energy demand stimulated by the economic growth, it can be said that the amount of the current power is insignificant. Realizing the high demand, the government is investing finance and human resources for uplifting the nation's energy status.
For the advancement of the nation's energy development and stability, the country has also encouraged the involvement of the private sector. Further more, the private sector can generate, distribute and sell power to the customers. In such approach the government not only provide license for the investors who are interested to involve in such venture it but also purchase power from them.
Power Africa is the President Obama's initiative to supply 30,000 MW to African countries and mobilizes 7 billion dollar for the implementation of the programme and with this scheme, the private sector play a very crucial role. The programme supports the nation's energy development strategy through technical assistance.
