Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has confirmed Charles Kiprotich Tanui as the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Managing Director. Tanui who has been holding the position on an acting capacity since May 2013, has been given a three year contract.
Tanui replaces Selest Kilinda, who was sacked after an internal audit revealed that he had hired relatives in the corporation. The employment comes barely a week after Chirchir appointed three parastatal heads under the same ministry. Tuesday, the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum appointed heads of Kenya Power, Energy Regulatory Commission and Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).
Albert Mugo was picked to head KenGen, Ben Chumo confirmed at the helm of Kenya Power and Laurencia Njagi appointed as the ERC boss. Njagi served as the Kenya Power Company Secretary before she left for the World Bank. Prior to this appointment, Tanui was Chief Manager Finance and Strategy in charge of Finance, ICT, Business Development and Corporate Planning Departments at Kenya Pipeline. With a 21-year working experience, Tanui holds a BA in Economics and Sociology and an MBA in Strategic Management from Moi University.
After making the appointments, Chirchir explained that the exercise was delayed with a view to ensure that they met the constitutional requirements of gender and regional balance, which has been met. He further explained that the ministry also wanted to appoint a CEO for the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) alongside the three but it was not possible since the REA board is not fully constituted.
